Mary Elizabeth Rinaldi is a highly respected national and international tax lawyer.  She is well known for her representation of individual taxpayers, corporations, small and mid-sized businesses, banks, trusts and other entities across the United States and around the globe in complex criminal and civil tax law matters.

Ms. Rinaldi handles a diverse range of sophisticated tax controversies and disputes, including cases involving the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), offshore voluntary disclosures and tax amnesty programs, IRS and Department of Justice criminal investigations, civil tax audits and examinations, and employment tax audits.  She draws on her extensive understanding of national and international tax law matters to counsel clients facing serious tax issues and challenges.  Ms. Rinaldi understands the sensitive nature of these types of cases and works one on one with her clients to develop legal strategies that minimize exposure while producing optimal outcomes.

Former IRS Attorney and U.S. Tax Court Law Clerk

Prior to entering private practice, Mary Elizabeth Rinaldi worked as a trial attorney with the Internal Revenue Service and served as a law clerk for the Honorable Laurence J. Whalen of the United States Tax Court.  This experience and background gives her a distinct advantage in helping clients resolve significant tax law controversies and disputes. 

Ms. Rinaldi has an intimate understanding of government operations and knows how the IRS investigates and prosecutes these types of cases.  She draws on this unique insight and knowledge to craft legal strategies that quickly and effectively resolve her clients’ controversies while minimizing the taxes and penalties often associated with these types of cases.

In every tax matter, Ms. Rinaldi is committed to protecting the legal rights and interests of her clients.  She is an aggressive advocate who represents clients in complex tax controversies and disputes before the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Tax Court, and federal courts and state taxing authorities in Washington D.C., Virginia, Massachusetts, and other states across the nation.  Ms. Rinaldi is also highly regarded for the legal advice and guidance that she provides to clients facing audits by the IRS and state taxing authorities.

Professional Involvement:

Ms. Rinaldi is actively involved in a number of professional associations and committees.  She is a member of American Bar Association (ABA) and the ABA Section of Taxation’s Civil & Criminal Tax Penalties Committee where she serves as a member of the Committee’s Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Task Force and the Civil & Criminal Penalties Task Force. Ms. Rinaldi regularly reviews and contributes comments to the American Bar Association on proposed federal tax legislation and regulations addressing tax penalties and enforcement activities. She also actively participates in the ABA’s Section of Criminal Justice’s White Collar Crime Division.
